How to Design for Textile & Footwear Recycling – Insights Refashion’s Webinar

Ellie recently attended Refashion’s webinar “Best Design Practices for Recycling”, where we explored the key challenges and opportunities in textile and footwear recycling. A key takeaway from the session was that recycling is not just an end-of-life process but a crucial factor that should be considered from the very start of a product’s design. Thoughtful material choices and design strategies can significantly impact the efficiency and success of recycling efforts.

We listed the key take-aways for you:

External disruptors

These are components that can be removed during a pre-recycling preparation stage, known as “dismantling.” Examples include zippers, eyelets, boning, patches, and similar elements.

Internal disruptors

Unlike external ones, these cannot be separated from the product as they are integrated or chemically bonded to it. Examples include elastane over 5%, multi-material blends, or coated fabrics. These disruptors pose greater challenges for recycling

Recycling facilitators

These are design choices that simplify and optimize recycling, positively impacting at least one stage of the process. Examples include single-material fabrics, single-layer structures, and monochrome textiles.

Upcoming penalties for hazardous components – only in France at this moment

Starting in 2025metallic-plastic threads, electrical, and electronic components will be facing financial penalties. These materials are considered hazardous during processing in sorting and recycling centers and will therefore be subject to financial penalties. This measure is specific to France and is part of their efforts to improve the recycling industry and promote the circular economy.
